Where to Start
The first step in your engagement ring journey is to create a checklist of important non-negotiables.
Everyone’s journey is unique, and we all have our own predispositions for what we want.
Having your non-negotiables written down, you can avoid getting less than what you want–and losing yourself in the infinite possibilities of what is out there.
Things to Consider
Know Your Budget
The first and most important step for engagement ring buying is to set your budget. Diamonds are a serious investment, so forget the old 3–month salary adage.
There’s no one size fits all for ring etiquette. Ask around your mutual social circles, family, and consider your partner’s desires and expectations. Also keep in mind, you can always upgrade it
later for a special vow, renewal ceremony,
or anniversary.
Several factors come into play when it comes to the price of an engagement ring:
- The size and quality of the center stone
- Any details like a halo or stones set in the band
- The type of metal chosen
Style Matters
The next important step in your engagement ring shopping is the shape and cut. You really want to get this one right. You can check Pinterest boards, ask friends and family, or ask them yourself.
There is a difference between the shape and the cut. The shape refers to the basic outline of the diamond when seen face up. The cut refers to the arrangement of an individual stone. This arrangement can affect the brilliance and the sparkle of the ring.
Round diamonds are the most classic and continue to be the most popular diamond shape for engagement rings, with brilliant cut as the most popular cut. They will also be on the more expensive end than the other shapes.
Square diamonds are the next most popular. These come in a variety of cuts with Princess being most highly sought after. Then comes emerald cut, cushion cut, asscher cut and marquise cut.
Although Oval and Pear shapes had gone out of fashion, they seem to be making a big come back for 2022 in Vogue and with celebrity purchases.
The Four C's
Narrow Your Search
You’ve got your budget and diamond shape narrowed. Now, nail down the quality you’re after.
This is where we teach you the 4 C’s. You may have heard the term 4 C’s thrown around, but what do they really mean?

We also suggest you read about Diamond Fluorescence (does it glow under black light?), because having fluorescence lowers price, but in rare cases can make a stone milky looking.
Setting
Top Three Tips
- Remember to ensure the seller uses side-stones of the same color as your center stone.
- A yellow gold setting will allow you to go lower on your diamond color (J or K)
- Finding the right ring size can be tricky, so ensure you have at least one free resizing.
