Bulgari has done it again, setting a new world record, beating out only itself for multiple years in a row. At this year’s Watches and Wonders, the premier annual event for all things horological, the brand debuted its new version of the Octo Finissimo. Already the thinnest timepiece ever made, the new 2022 watch sets yet another record as the latest thinnest timepiece ever made. This is the eighth time that the brand has set this particular record.
So what to know about the watch in question? The Octo Finissimo Ultra is just a mere 1.8 mm thick. That’s about 0.07 inches, or just under 1/16 of an inch. The nearly-impossible watch is a mind-bender for sure. Just take one look at it and it’s not exactly clear how it can work. But Bulgari has put all of the watch’s inner workings on display, laying out nearly all of the movement onto one plane, where it’s all exposed for the curious viewer.

In an interview, Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Bulgari’s product creation executive director, said, “The challenge of this eighth record was the most difficult to overcome, since we had to break the rules not only in terms of movement design, but also of the case, the case back, the bracelet and the folding clasp.
To achieve this degree of thinness, you not only have to review your way of thinking, but you must also draw upon a wide range of skills, play with multiple materials and adapt to a multitude of new constraints. In this sense, the Octo Finissimo Ultra is unquestionably the ultimate complication in this vast field of possibilities represented by ultra-miniaturization.”
